The Sea Breeze Fire District (SBFD) serves the Sea Breeze community in Rochester, New York, providing all volunteer fire and emergency medical services. Established in 1908, the SBFD operates from a single fire station located at 4657 Culver Road. This station, originally built in 1920, underwent an expansion in 2006 to accommodate the growing needs of the community.
The station features two back-in bays facing Culver Road, housing the first due engine (194) and squad (197). A third bay along Nixon Road stores the department’s admin vehicle and additional supplies. The 2006 expansion added two more back in bays, utilized for the second due engine (195), and for the antique engine (192, as pictured to the right)
Over the years, the SBFD has remained committed to adapting and enhancing its facilities and equipment to effectively serve the Sea Breeze community’s fire and emergency medical needs.
The Sea Breeze Fire District is located in Sea Breeze, New York. Sea Breeze is a hamlet within the Town of Irondequoit, situated on the northeast side of the town. The close knit community offers a unique array of attractions and local staples, including the Seabreeze Amusement Park (home to the country’s oldest continuously operating roller coaster the Jack Rabbit), Marge’s Lakeside Inn, Parkside Diner, Whispering Pines Miniature Golf Course (Whispering Pines Miniature Golf is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the oldest miniature golf course in the United States), Don’s Original, The Union Tavern, Shamrock Jack’s Irish Pub, and many more small businesses.
The Sea Breeze Fire District is also surrounded by two major bodies of water: Lake Ontario and the Irondequoit Bay. Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. It is bounded on the north, west, and southwest by the Canadian province of Ontario, and on the south and east by the U.S. state of New York. The Canada/United States border spans the center of the lake. Lake Ontario is 193 miles long and 52.82 miles wide. The Irondequoit Bay is a 4 mile long, 0.5 to 1-mile-wide, deep-water inlet of Lake Ontario. It is separated from the lake by a barrier beach. It is a major recreational hub for boating, fishing, and ice fishing, with key locations like Irondequoit Bay State Marine Park and Seabreeze Pier. The bay is a 1,660 acre water body, often described as a mini Finger Lake, that reaches depths of up to 73 feet.
You may be wondering why these facts matter. In recent years, the Sea Breeze Fire District has seen a notable increase in water related emergencies. The Irondequoit bay boat ramp is located within the Sea Breeze Fire district. In recent years the traffic through the boat launch has increased dramatically which has lead to the drastic increase in water related emergencies. This creates a unique and rewarding opportunity for our members, who receive specialized training in water rescue operations and advanced response tactics. During the winter months, volunteers are also trained in ice rescue techniques, responding to a growing number of ice related emergencies. These specialized skills allow our members to make a real difference while gaining hands on experience in high impact rescue operations.
